Hours upon hours of research is the first thing that comes to mind when I think of what to say about this book. Truly, there is no comparison to this work when it comes to the depth of information and logical and intelligent conclusions the author has put together. Other books on the subject stand down in shame. This being said, I think whether or not you will enjoy this book is going to depend largely on why you are interested in reading it. If you are simply looking for a lightweight read for pleasure, this probably will not be for you. The author has gone to great lengths to ensure historical accuracy and meticulous detail recording. If, however, you are looking to this book to teach you little known facts, uncover the life of this great woman of the past or study the Tudor way of life--then this is the first book that I would recommend.Sometimes--reality is more exciting than fiction and I was greatly impressed by the lack of silly liberties. So much of the time biographies end up being more fiction than truth, and I really felt this book was a rare exception to that rule.Further reasons I liked it:1. Taught me things I didn't know.2. Kept me entertained because of beautiful writing and excellent arrangement.3. Made me want to learn more about the other things mentioned aside from Elizabeth of York.I would definitely recommend this to others, particularly if you have an interest in Tudor history or the general time period. This is a classy book that deserves to be read and appreciated. This review is based on a digital ARC provided by the publisher through Netgalley.
Elizabeth of York was like a hinge between the Plantagenets and the Tudors. Henry VII married her to strengthen his claim to the throne of England by conquest and yet he delayed both their wedding and her coronation in the attempt to assert it was his claim on the throne that mattered, not hers. (But it was really hers that mattered.)Haunting both Elizabeth's "reign" as Queen and Henry's rule as King were her little brothers, Edward V and Richard, the Duke of York. Richard III had bastardized all of Edward IV's children, including Elizabeth, in Parliament--claiming that Edward had a pre-existing marital contract--and had held Edward and Richard in the Tower of London. They were reportedly killed there by orders of Richard III, yet their remains had never been found. Henry VII tried to find them; Elizabeth, as Weir notes, must have always wondered what happened to her brothers, who came before, as males, in the line of succession.Weir introduces various other mysteries along the way through this biography: would Elizabeth really have wanted to marry Richard III? did Henry VII dislike Elizabeth's mother, Elizabeth Woodville? did Elizabeth and Margaret Beaufort, Henry's mother, get along or not? why did Queen Elizabeth of York go to Wales while pregnant and ill?, etc. She presents various pieces of evidence, analyzes their sources, presents her opinion, but ultimately leaves it to the reader to decide unless she is certain of the answer. At first--and she followed that process in another of her books I've read, "The Lady in the Tower", about the fall of Anne Boleyn--this process frustrated me because it seemed to interrupt the flow of the narrative. But I have grown to accept and appreciate her letting me in on the process of thinking about the past, disputed information, and sources.I recommend "Elizabeth of York: The First Tudor Queen" to those who want to know more about the world of the Tudors as well as those who want to know more about Elizabeth. Alison Weir describes the structures and finances of the Tudor Court with vivid detail. Well illustrated. No index in the Kindle edition; I don't like not having an index!
I loved this well researched book. Alison Weir scored another hit once again. Sometimes going thru the actual purchase rolls can sometimes be a bit tedious - but she is a marvelous historian and I appreciate that and this minor criticism reflects that (reason why I did not give her 5 stars).Buy this, you will LOVE it.
Just finished reading this book and have to say I loved it. Alison Weir delivers as usual in clarity, readability, and accuracy. I have read most of her books and this one, in my opinion, is one of the best. It does contain information on many of her family members but does not lose Elizabeth of York as the focus. I didn't read much of the extensive information provided in the appendices. The main work itself was over 400 pages but it did grab and keep my interest. Loved the interview with the author!
A remarkable biography of Elizabeth of York. I truly enjoyed it.As will all of Alison Weir's books, it was well-written and plotted. It read in a linear fashion, with no unnecessary asides or factoids. I am slowly reading all of her books I enjoy them so much.Keep up the good work, Ms. Weir!
I like all of Alison Weir's books as they provide a lot of detail around how people lived and not just their historical actions. She is upfront that she makes a few stretches here and there around the subject's feelings but when she doesn't they are based on historical facts as much as possible.
As a "history buff", I have always loved to read biography and/or history. Some of the work is well-done, however; when I want well-researched material, I rely on the experts. Alison Weir is such an expert. I have purchased every book she has written on the Tudor dynasty and have found that she delves into material that others skip, or do not have access to. My reading extends from the end of the Plantangenet era to the present and Weir has never failed to reveal new details, insights and provide scholarly reading.
Fascinating read about a little known Queen of England, at least for me. Her son, Henry VII, steals all the historical "glory" with his tribulation but his mother faced quite a few dangers and troubles of her own. This is one of those books that I will certainly re-read in the future.
