I would consider myself a sewing hobbyist at an intermediate skill level. I have some sewing experience; I can read and sew from a pattern, and I can make some adjustments. However I'm not a professional seamstress or pattern maker. Which is why this book appealed to me- it looked like a good intro to pattern making, and it looked like it might show me how to do some more advanced alterations.I agree with one of the previous comments- Who on earth is this book made for? The monotonous first 45 pages covers things that anyone who has sewn anything EVER, should already know. Like really- do we need to devote 4 pages to the required equipment? It's a sewing book- who would have known that I need a SEWING MACHINE, thread, pins, a pincushion and scissors. It would have been more effective to instead discuss the materials that are uniquely relevant to pattern making and alterations. For example, of the items listed is "dressmaking skirt curve" with a photo of random curve tools. This is one of the only tools in the list that is probably going to be NEW to someone learning about pattern making, and yet the curves are listed in one lump group, and the book doesn't even tell us the names of each curve. The book wastes pages describing basic tools and and even shows a picture of a sewing machine (in case you didn't know what that looked like), but it's not going to tell me to go buy a french curve for my pattern making? Epic Fail.The next 25 pages detail how to take measurements and how to cut out a pattern. Let me save you 24 pages. Step one: Take out tape measure, wrap it around body part. Read. Record. Step 2: Take out pattern page, identify your size, cut along the line, pin to fabric, cut fabric. Ok, I could see how you might want to dedicate a couple of pages to briefly review fabric bias, marking methods, tailors tacks, ect. But 25 pages? Ridiculous.The simple alterations section was also disappointing. Most of the alterations were very basic things that most people would figure out how to do without instruction (lengthening/shortening ect). I expect to see this type of info in this book, however they spent a whole chapter explaining and re-explaining the same concepts. For example there are multiple pages about lengthening things- how to lengthen a skirt, a sleeve, a bodice, a belt. Each of these are all listed as separate alterations, with separate instructions and diagrams, but in my mind they are pretty much the same- if I want to add 2 inches to either of these I'm going to cut the pattern, and tape a 2 inch strip of paper between the pattern pieces. If I want to shorten it, I'm going to do the opposite.The advanced pattern alteration section was a little more informative. Stuff like how to cut and arrange the pattern to increase the bust measurement without changing the overall shape of the bodice, making alterations to the pattern to correct fitting problems, a nifty diagram of bodice dart locations. These are things that I EXPECTED to see in this book, and that I DID find useful and informative, though most of these alterations cover issues with FIT, and not necessarily alterations for aesthetic purposes. I wish the book had covered more creative elements like altering the pattern to allow for draping/ gathering/ pintucks and specifically how to make these custom details while maintaining the general shape of the bodice.The block pattern section of the book was confusing. Why do they have the reader enlarging and cutting out block patterns from the book? Isn't this a pattern DESIGN book? Secondly, I think it's moot to cover block patterns when they don't show how to USE the block pattern. Almost like saying "Hey check it out! Make a block pattern custom to your very own measurements! Annnd now we're not going to show you a single thing you can do with this." I would have loved to see them cover block patterns, walk the reader through making a custom block from scratch using their own measurements (and those nameless drafting curves they made you buy), and then demonstrate how to use the block as a guide to alter store bought patterns, as well as how to make custom creative alterations to the block using draping, pintucks, gathering ect. But no, it presented none of those things.Overall, I was disappointed. I had such high hopes for it, and it just fell flat.
Let me first say that I've read many sewing foundation books, and skimmed my fair share at the local bookstores. Secondly, this is the first review I've ever written for Amazon despite buying everything from curling irons to pooper scoopers from this site. I'm telling you this in order to convey my absolute adoration of this book. I borrowed it from the library a couple months ago and had to buy it after reading it.Most of the youth-targeted books out there (ahem Built by Wendy, Design-it-yourself clothes, etc) give you patterns for clothes that I consider dowdy and granola, and there's not a super amount of versatility in the offerings. This book shows you how to take existing patterns and customize fit and aesthetics (increasing or moving bust darts, adding collars, adjusting sleeves, etc) before you start cutting fabric. It also shows you how to create your own patterns from scratch, from these doohickeys called pattern blocks. I didn't even know pattern blocks existed, but after reading about how they allow you to make customizable, perfectly-fitting clothes, I now believe they are the key to my happiness.I assume that there are no other reviews because this book is new (2010), but SERIOUSLY, BUY THIS BOOK! And overlook my excessive parentheses!!!***EDITING 6 YEARS LATER just to clarify based on some questions people had. No this is not a youth targeted book featuring trendy (as of 2010) styles. They have very basic pattern blocks for what's essentially a shift dress (fitted top + pencil skirt), sleeves, & pants, and they show you how to modify those classic shapes, like take a pencil skirt and turn it into a flared skirt, slim sleeve to tulip sleeve, darts to princess seams etc. Plus how to modify for fit.
There is a lot of overlap and repetition when it comes to sewing books. This book is for beginners who just bought a commercial pattern and wants to understand them in color or illustrations. But if you already have experience and books on patterns like Vogue or Readers Digest, this book won't give you extra information. It would be great for a beginning fashion student because it also gives you pattern blocks that you can trace and make your own. You still have enlarge them and print them, but at least they included them. The chapter on altering your own patterns is very basic. Its a repetition of the same types of instructions in commercial patterns but in color which is nice but if you already know this stuff, it would be repetitive. This book is 1/2 inch in thickness and around the size of copy paper or an old school marble composition book. Therefore this book doesn't provide too much depth to someone who is semi-experienced or advanced experienced.
I have sewn for over 50 years and agreed to teach a 12 yr old neighbor to sew. I wanted something for her to reference what I was explaining, and wanted photos. This is the MOST COMPREHENSIVE book I have ever found covering all the bases and has non-stop photos and illustrations. You have basically taken my teaching job away--which is FINE! HA!
The first few chapters were straightforward with how you would measure your body, explaining how fabrics are categorized, and how they're cut. Towards the end, instructions for making your own pattern is very poor. The pictures were too small, and there weren't enough step-by-step instructions for adjusting the basic patterns provided. The pattern was a too simple, almost like an outline. You wouldn't know how to recreate the curves with this book alone. I would purchase another book.
