I was so confident after reading the first 14 chapters that I immediately scheduled my CCENT and passed it! I did do every single written lab, hands-on lab, and all the review questions after every chapter. The subnetting section is worth the price of the book alone. I simply couldn't understand it from anyone else until I read that chapter. I'm going to knock out the last 7 chapters and schedule the CCNA. I got the kindle version so when I read at home, my last reading position automatically synced to my phone when I was out and about. This made studying real efficient.*EDIT: I obtained my CCNA. The 2nd part was harder and I supplemented my studies with other online sources to become more confident before testing.
First, to start up it's a really huge book for me and you have to be willing to go thru it all to gain the knowledge. Like everyone else says, the book is easy to read and understand. Subnetting and Vlsm are explained quite simply but sometimes it bothers me with class B and A when they reach pass their classful boundary. The key to master it is more practice. Besides that, OSPF, VLANs, Security were all chapters that i really enjoyed. A piece of advice i can give is not to only know how to configure routing protocols but to also know how to troubleshoot them. Because i got a little lost when i was asked to troubleshoot OSPF during the test and it wasn't a really good feeling, i lost so much time on it while i still had 20 questions remaining and 19 min to finish them. You can already imagine my frustration at that point. However, i'm glad to say that i pass my CCENT last Friday, and it took me 4 month with 4 or 5 hour a day, in between my part-time job to read all 14 chapters, and by doing all labs and review questions. I also used videos and practice questions of Todd by subscribing to his website and i can totally assure you that they came really handy to me during the test. Some of the questions i had were similar and easy for me to grasp quickly. Overall, if you want to pass that test, this is the book to get, and if you can and don't mind spending a bit, subscribe to Todd website and go thru all practice questions and you'll be become victorious.Update, i forgot to mention that i passed my CCENT with a score of 907 but my first try on the CCNA was a failure, and i rescheduled immediately and passed it yesterday with a score of 894, thought i nailed it correctly but i ended with that score because of troubleshooting and ip service. Well, what i can say about the second part of the book is that everything you need to know about EIGRP, OSPF multi area, STP, and frame Relay are explained thoroughly. Make no mistake folks, it's a lot of information to take in and at times it frustrated me but i kept on, and i thank God that i got it. Besides that, others have mentioned some typos and mistakes in the book that i also came across but don't let that stop you from going thru all materials because the information given is highly relevant and the typos are negligible because you can actually find the right info about the errors on the internet if you dig deep enough. You know what i mean lol. One other thing, the IOS chapter lacked some explanation for me so it was a little hard to grasp the concept of the configuration register, i mean turning the bit 6 on for password recovery until i came across a cisco explanation of that section on the internet. Cisco explained you in detail how it works to put the hexadecimal number together yielding 0x2102 for the config-register default setting and 0x2142 for the password recovery. Briefly for that chapter look for the configuration register sheet and everything will be clearer than it is. As for the other chapters, i believe they are clear enough and convey what you need to Pass the CCNA. I will also advice you to do a lot of practice question on all chapters over and over again, so no question will throw you off on the exam because time is sensitive and you need to know your s*** so you can have more time to figure out the troubleshooting section. Like i said before, i used Todd practice questions and videos, i subscribed to it and it helps me like you have no idea. So Good luck for future candidate.
I really enjoyed this book. There were quite a few errors along the way. It mostly fell apart when you started to apply the concepts in the labs and example labs. I understand it's very hard to accurately make labs. For a beginner this might frustrate them. It could mean hours of unnecessary troubleshooting. Good thing I knew what I was doing. Through all the faults, I really liked the easy to follow and understand material. The bonus cbtnugget videos were priceless. I absolutely loved Jeremy Cioara. His insightful and humorous lectures really drove the concepts home. I can't believe I read the whole book in three months. I will probably read it again. It's really hard to memorize all the tiny details.
My buddy and I were looking at study guides for the CCNA exam at our local chain book retailer. We saw this book and were both impressed. However, we did not want to pay the "retail price" so we both ordered ourselves copies on Amazon.Excellent study guide for both the ICND1 (CCENT) and ICND2 (CCNA) exams. Very good index and the author explains the concept in a simplistic way.In addition the book comes with downloadable practice exams, Flash Cards and end-of-chapter exams. Lots of proof of concept examples that you can setup using your own lab equipment or network simulator.
Though I did not pass my CCENT the first time, I do not put that on this study guide, as it was my eagerness to get the exam taken that ultimately screwed me in end .The material is abundant. Yes there are a couple of errors, but you can just go to the provided website and see the corrections. They're are two accompanying videos per chapter that helped me loads. Chapter reviews and physical labs. I am going to reread chapters 1-14 (CCENT cert) and I'm sure I'll pass easy.
Excellent book so far (going through it lesson by lesson). I attended CCNA bootcamp and didn't pass the test the first time so going through this book again is an excellent review and well-organized way to study since each chapter includes a review and questions. Some of it is basic but there is enough in here to definitely help me to better understand and memorize key points. The best thing is the accompanying hands-on lab. Very well written and laid out. I will post back after I'm done and have taken the test again. Reading it on a Kindle is super great too - I can just search for "memorize" and all of the suggestions for things to memorize show up.... so cool.
I like lammle's books but after cover to cover read, working all of the labs multiple times, studying the questions at the end of each chapter, ie., doing everything a serious type-a student does, it was not nearly enough to pass the test. What the book is really good at is introducing and explaining the concepts to where you can understand them. Additional materials are needed to get to the depths needed to pass the ccna.
