As he has in his Adrian English, Holmes & Moriarty, Fair Game, Dangerous Grounds and I Spy series, master of mystery Josh Lanyon has grabbed us again with two completely different protagonists who fall instantly in lust, and then just can't figure out how to complete the circle to like and love without getting themselves almost killed along the way. This one takes place in remote Oregon, where the town of Nearby has suddenly found itself in the middle of a mystery, or two, thanks to the instinct of its police chief, Frankie (a middle-aged lady), who has two deputies, one of whom, Ron Haskell, is as laid back as they come, and gay as a goose but not outwardly (sort of a mid-sized and toned down lumberjack type). He and his straight footloose and fancy free cop partner, Zeke, are at loose ends when they are assigned to pick up and work with two FBI agents who've flown in from Los Angeles to check out what chief Frankie believes could be a local link to a series of serial killings that have plagued the I-5 corridor for more than 20 years. One of those agents is the blond, toned, and spectacularly gorgeous Adam Darling, whose female partner is so similar in "composition" to him that Rob and Zeke immediately dub them Ken and Barbie. That's where the kid's games stop. This is a very neatly plotted, twist-and-turn Lanyon tour de force which concentrates on hiding clues from its cast and reader just as well as all his other series. The explosive beginning and hot-and-cold segues in the relationship between Rob and Adam leave you out on a hook until the very end--a very surprising end all around.Along the way you will learn a lot about the Native American culture of the Northwest, the attitudes of the usual gang of stereotypical small-town characters, and the way mid-30s lonely gay men eventually have to face the future, with or without hope. I think Lanyon is giving us a clue in the ending of this one, and one would hope he's got another couple of adventures percolating for two very different, yet seriously compatible, men.

This story fits into a slot during the events of The Monet Murders with a crossover appearance by Agent Sam Kennedy. Agent Adam Darling is investigating a serial killer who's been leaving bodies along the Interstate. When the manager of a Native American Museum in Nearby, OR, is found murdered and left in one of the museum's displays, Adam and his new partner are sent to investigate. There's an instant attraction between Adam and Nearby's deputy sheriff Ron Haskell, and their following coming-together is by mutual consent a one-night thing. Right? Wrong. More bodies, these in the form of decades-old bones will bring Adam back to Nearby, and the discovery that Ron may be more than he hoped for, as the two set out to prove the skeletons may have been earlier victims of the Interstate Killer. Unscrambling their personal lives may take a little longer than the solving of the crime, however.Josh Lanyon has a habit of pairing exact opposites, then having them struggle to find an answer to the problem of how to stay together. As well as a good crime thriller, this story explains what happened to take Sam Kennedy away from the events sin the Monet Murders, as well as bring two new characters to the readers' attention. The novel was purchased by the reviewed and no remuneration was involved in the writing of this review.

Just a great read. Spoiler alert for those who don't want to know what the books about. This one starts a kid waiting for a friend to show up to give him a ride. Its colder than hell but the kids wants a way out of his life in the little town of Nearby. Little did he know he'd never make it.Sheriffs Deputies Rob Haskell and Zeke Lang are waiting at the airport for two FBI agents to arrive.Special Agent Adam Darling and Jonnie Gould are here because Sheriff Francesca "Frankie" McLellan asked for their help.Human remains had been discovered by campers. The body was in a shallow grave and covered with rocks on a decommissioned logging road off Route 140. Gould and Darling were there to see if this body might be a body left by The Roadside Ripper. A serial killer the FBI is on the hunt for. They all arrive at a funeral home that the ME, Doc Cooper, is using to look at the body. The skeletal remains are on a metal gurney in the embalming room. Its the only place they can use.Doc advises them the skeleton has been buried for at least twenty years and is the skeleton of a young male in his late teens or early twenties. No wallet or other means of identification. He's an unknown.A known missing person from twenty years ago is another male. A hiker who disappeared. This skeleton isn't him though as he had had a hip replacement. No bad hip on this skeleton.Dove Koletar was also missing but it was presumed he left on his own. His body has never been found either, if there is a body to be found.Adam Darling was on the fast track as an FBI agent till an incident threw him off the rails. Its an incident that still haunts him as it cost a woman her life.Gould is leaving the FBI after she gets married in four months. Her fiance is also an FBI agent. Gould has been the best partner Adam has ever had and she could care less that Adam is gay.Darling has been relegated to checking on found bodies to see if they are Ripper bodies. Its a thankless job but at least he's still an Agent for the FBI.Rob is also gay and he's drawn to Darling. He and Adam decide they will make a night of it in the cabin that Darling is staying in while in Nearby. The two of them make beautiful music together and Rob is rather disappointed when Darling and Gould head back to California.Three months later Darling and his new partner Russell are back are in Nearby. A murder was committed on Federal Property. The murdered woman is Cynthia Joseph and her murder will kick off violence in little Nearby. So begins a damned fine read. This one has Rob, Adam, Frankie, Zeke, Native American folklore, a missing Tiffany Joseph, a ravens mask stolen from the local museum where Joseph died, a missing knife, a man who dresses like a raven, Buck Campbell, a kid named Dove Koletar, his mother, old photos that hold the key, the towns people on a search for a missing girl, an Adam who finds another skeleton when he falls down a slope while on that search, a man named Bechtel, a kidnapped Adam, Agent Sam Kennedy of the FBI's BAU, Adams partner Farrell who's a self serving idiot and Adam and Rob on the search to find a murderer solve the crime and find out how they really feel about each other.Five Stars.
