Carolyn Brown's writing is dreadfully predictable and amateurish. I found myself frustrated at her lack of ability to describe a scene or situation without hitting the reader over the head with the obvious. Her plot was incredibly predictable and rather "ho hum". I only finished the book because I was hoping that Ms. Brown would actually pull out of the tail spin that her plot was taking. Sadly, it was a crash landing and the wreckage was not satisfying at all. I don't recommend this book at all. I had purchased this book and another one by Ms. Brown at the same time. I'm not going to bother reading the second one.
Three teachers, all in their early /mix thirties, descend upon a Florida beach for a summer vacation. They learn about themselves and find love. Easy summer read that has just enough emotion and twists to make it enjoyable. These ladies could be my friends!
First, I picked the book out of sentimentality. The author lives in a part of Oklahoma where I spent many happy summer vacations with my mother's family. Secondly, the main characters live in Conway, Arkansas, where I spent my first two years of college. Thirdly, I read the reviews which all admired her writing style. They were right. She writes in a colloquial style with great humor. I loved the breezy style and thoroughly enjoyed being exposed to the Southernisms again. I got to be down South again without having to endure the humidity. All's well that ends well, as this does without once losing its quick pace and dragging in the middle as many books do. You can't beat this book for a light read that will have you chuckling on nearly every page...
Love the witty language and real characters! Enjoyed getting to know everyone but felt it was rushed at the end. I'm surprised! First book of hers I have felt I was left hanging! B.G.
Not overly deep or thought-provoking, but I really liked the characters and their devotion to each other. Sweet beach read that kept my interest without being overly 'sappy' or graphic.
This book was a quick and fun read but borderline silly i.e. The author calling a 45 year old man "an OLD man" when her female characters are 35 years old not 18 or 20. The dialogues of the women didn't sound real. The characters are glib.I kept on reading hoping for something a little better but in the end was disappointed. I know it's not a literary book but the story had no substance at all unlike those by Susan Elizabeth Phillips for example.I will not read this author again
It's not a bad book, but it's not that good either. With the reviews I read I thought it would be much better.
The writer must be hoping for a reality show using this premise or a movie.Even though the three women are trying to keep their independence by banding together & meeting through their PMS Clubto discuss their problems...which all seem to boil down to "is this the guy we want to bring home," it would be better if they tried to enjoy their independence & find ways to contribute to their professions. Only by truly being an independent individual will they find the happiness they seek.
