A children's book came out a few years ago about the life of George Gipp, but author Jack Cavanaugh has provided us with an adult version detailing the life of George Gipp, along with his legendary coach Knute Rockne.Both Gipp and Rockne shared the dubious distinction of not having graduated from high school. Gipp proved himself to be a free spirit at Notre Dame in that he often skipped attending classes, in addition to a laissez faire attitude towards attending football practices. Instead George much preferred honing his skills in the South Bend pool hall. You might call it an earlier case of George being George. You may think a stern disciplinarian like Rockne would have frowned on such behavior, but he knew he had an exceptional athlete who performed on the field once the game began. Surprisingly other well-known coaches such as Fielding Yost and Amos Alonso Stagg tolerated such behavior as well.I was surprised to learn that college players often weighed around 165 pounds during the 1910s and 1920s, the time this story took place. Author Cavanaugh provides us with a fair portrait of both Gipp and Rockne illustrating both their positives and negatives. As coach Rockne permitted his quarterback to be the only one to talk in a huddle. This was a period when football was primarily a running game since the shape of the football at this time was such that the quarterback could only place his hand on the football rather than grip it and toss a pass which inevitably went end-over-end.Of course the author spends time discussing exactly what George Gipp told Coach Rockne on his death bed. We have heard the quote in various ways as "Win one for the Gipper" and "Beat Army." In any case let's just let it be and not spoil a good story with what may be the facts. There were those in the academic department who were envious of the recognition that the university received for their athletic program rather than their academic program. The fact remains, however, it was George Gipp and Knute Rockne that made the school famous.Gipp passed away in 1920 a short time following his last game as a member of the Notre Dame football team of what we would call a strep throat. Had antibiotics been available to treat it at the time Gipp would most surely have survived.Following the death of Gipp the author relates the career of Coach Rockne at Notre Dame and his Four Horsemen made famous by the colorful writing of sportswriter Grantland Rice.Gipp was buried in his home town of Laurium in the Copper Country of Michigan's Upper Peninsula where a small park with a stone pyramid is dedicated to his memory. Rockne passed away in 1931 when the plane he was traveling in crashed in a Kansas wheat field while on his way to California.This is a story that has been waiting to be told, and I thank author Jack Cavanaugh for making this book a reality.
In additon to detailing George Gipps short life, the book provides an insight into the development of Notre Dame football and college football in general. Other characters of the time are looked at such as Knute Rockne . Overall it was worth the small cost but if you already have read up on the subject you probably do not need to read this book.
I'm a graduate of ND, and was a student in Parseghian's first years, so I know something about football. This book, ostensibly about Gipp (apparently no one really called him Gipper), is full of anecdotes and stories - told and repeated, and repeated again, and re-hashed. There is no order - it's not by character, by chronology or even remotely by topic. The author has a nice style, easy to read, and has researched his topic. Almost to the "more than you really wanted to know" category. But it needs an editor to give the text some shape.Perhaps the style is meant to disguise the fact that despite the title, only perhaps 35% of the book is actually about George Gipp. It's about football from 1910 to 1946, it's about ND and the tension between football and academics, it's about Rockne and anyone whoever played on any of Rock's teams. That's not bad if you love football and/or Notre Dame. But what could have been a great book really misses the mark.A friend had highly recommended this and I was really looking forward to it. Nice - but by the halfway mark I felt I was listening to an elderly relative who keeps telling the same stories, without remembering that he has already told you how he met the President.
What a great book about Notre Dame football 100 years ago. So many great games that laid the foundation for what Notre Dame football is today. Thanks to Fielding H. Yost boycotting Notre Dame from joining the Big Ten back in 1909, Notre Dame has chosen to be a national brand playing teams coast to coast while remaining independent. Go Irish Go!
Great book!! As a life long Fighting Irish fan I was very familiar with the history of Notre Dame. This book was a great read and I learned even more about my favorite team!!! GO IRISH!!!
A;though somewhat repetitive (yes, Gipp was a pool shark, I got that), I found the portions related to the history of football particularly interesting.
The Gipp and Notre Dame....five stars each....rate this a ten.
I got three copies for three graduating senior boys who loved it Great choice for ND fans who want to know more about the traditions..
