This book is an Epic help to us! We have two copies: one for me, and one for our daughter. If your child is showing symptoms of Schizophrenia, don’t try ignoring them and just hoping – you will regret it. You have to get them treatment, preferably before they’re 18. It started for us in 9th grade with our daughter wearing hoodies over her head, thinking people could hear her thoughts, and thinking she was on a reality TV show. It progressed to hallucinations, mostly auditory, but some visual. She’s been hospitalized three times. I cried oceans, believe me. The solution is The Medicine. Thank God, there are medicines now that they didn’t have back when Lori Schiller first got sick. The problem is that they don’t want to take the medicine. It’s a weird combination of things: They’re determined to not have Schizophrenia because of fear and/or embarrassment, they don’t believe they’re sick because it seems so real, so they believe it is all real, but we’re just not able to see it, or we’re all experiencing it too, but hiding it, or the voices are threatening things if they take the medicine, or – lastly - when the medicine starts working, they start missing the voices! Our daughter is 18 now and thankfully is okay. We think she experienced terrifying enough things this last time that she will not fight against the medicine, and understands that every time she relapses it gets worse. But we had Mental Health Power of Attorney to make her get treatment, despite being 18. I talk to her every day about Schizophrenia – you have to say the word and say it without fear or shame. Just calmness and okay-ness. We read certain pages from this book together. And we talk about God, and that it’s not about God saving her from hell and the demons, it’s about God saving her from Schizophrenia – and this is by taking the life-saving medicine (Olanzapine for us) and that the medicine is the Blessing from God.
The abnormal psych course I am currently taking requires us to not only participate in lectures and read the text book, but to read two additional books. A book report has to be completed for each of these books. The professor has a book list that we can choose from but also allows alternate books per his approval. I requested and was given permission to read "The Quiet Room".I really enjoyed this book as there were several different chapters that were written by those in Lori's life that were affected by her illness. It gives a different prospective on mental illness from not only the person suffering but also those who love and care for them.Although it was required reading I had a hard time putting it down. It definitely helped me understand the struggles someone with a mental illness deals with and continues to struggle with for their entire lives.A good read for sure!
I purchased this book to gain a better understanding of the debilitating disease which is schizophrenia; I simply wanted to gain perspective in order to better empathize with someone who was suffering through the burdens of this traumatic condition. This book genuinely helped me to gain insight and allowed me to better communicate and relate and thus, gave me the opportunity to better help he who needed my assistance in this regard. Worth the read whether you personally are affected by this ailment or not; even if you don't know anyone who has been diagnosed as schizophrenic, this book can still help to offer you perspective on the disease.
Lori Schiller's harrowing story is brave on so many levels. This portrayal of her odyssey with mental illness is so vivid and detailed that the reader will be transported into territories of life experience completely foreign to most - like a trip to the dark side of the moon. Shiller's book inspires hope and compassion for people suffering from major mental illness. It holds value for the mentally ill, the people wo love them, the professionals who treat them, and for those who know nothing about the plights of the mentally ill.The Quiet Room held special fascination for me because I was one of he mental health workers on Lori's unit who participated in her restraints. I remember her well and fondly. Though even as a first hand witness to her sufferings at the hospital, her book revealed so many more dimensions of her experience that were entirely invisible, yet highly relevant.
Wow...My godson was just diagnosed with schizophrenia and I was looking for a book to help me understand. This book frightened me but help me understand. He is going thru much of what Lori went thru now at the beginning. What a courageous woman Lori has to be to have gone thru this and lived to tell her story.
I wasn't diagnosed until a year ago and I'm 50. As I grasp for anything to help me understand my condition, someone on a face book schizophrenia group suggested this book and I am very grateful he did. It took me a LONG time to read since it's difficult to concentrate but I wanted to thank Lori Schiller for sharing her story and survival recovery as well as Amanda Bennet who I am now following and looking for that next great read. This is a true story of the authors journey through and with schizophrenia. I liked how it was told from the various viewpoints of her family, psychiatrists, and her own perspective. I loved the authors writing and how she was able to take me into her world. The experience is something I cannot imagine living. I now have a new understand of how this disease affects everyone in the sufferers life. How it has a sudden onset in the late teens and destroys all connections to the outside world. Voices inside one's head become more real than outside voices. As this took place in the 1980's it showed me the limited options available at the time. I was truly horrified at many of the methods used, one of which was called "the quiet room." A heartfelt thank you to the author for her courage in writing such a deeply personal account.
