I hung in there for a good long while, but I'm stopping my read through this series here. (I started on Book 10 and put it down about 1/4 of the way through.) When this series is firing on all cylinders, it's a fun ride. Terrific space battles, meaningful happenings with significant impact on the world, characters you care about. Unfortunately, the series has started to get bogged down in the last couple books, and by now I see that it's not going to turn around enough to make me interested again. I read that Weber had planned to kill Harrington off in Book 5. I realize now that would have been the wiser course (and much more realistic, given the number and severity of the conflicts she has been engaged in!). I was willing to overlook the Mary Sue-ism of Harrington while her story was rocketing along. Now that the pace has slowed to a crawl (vivid detail of treecats using sign language; pages and pages of inner monologue between spoken dialogue that doesn't really make sense without it), Honor's infallibility has gorwn a tad tiresome. Really glad I read the first few books, and I'd recommend those to anyone. Time to move onto greener fields.

Imagine that you are reading the minutes of a committee meeting in which the secretary records a description of each participant, his mode of dress, background, character, likes and dislikes, etc. Being clairvoyant, she records his mental ruminations and emotional state as the meeting progresses. The committee discusses every aspect of each subject in detail. They mull over every possible course of action and its ramifications and the technical features of any hardware or software they might apply to solve any problems. In closing, they rarely reach a definitive conclusion. If you think you would enjoy reading such a report, then this is the book for you.The above scenario is repeated ad nauseam in this book (vol. 9) whether the scene is a conference room, the bridge of ship in combat, or tea time in the palace. In the last instance, you will be informed how each participant takes his tea and why. In short, this novel is heavily padded with useless information and banal banter. It is 75% chaff and 25% kernel. I recommend scanning the book. Most of the part worth reading is in the last one-quarter. A competent editor needs to take a meat cleaver and pare the fat from this entire series, especially this novel.

I'm new to the Honor Harrington series. I was hooked by Amazon's offer of "On Basilisk Station" for free on my Kindle, and I've been enjoying the series a great deal until hitting something of a speed bump with this book. The previous book "Echoes of Honor" was also very long, so perhaps reading this one so soon after was a mistake. In any event, I think the problem is that Weber is trying to tell too many stories here. There are at least four separate threads going on (1) Honor's return after two years in captivity; (2) the Manties development of some cool new weapons and the continuation of the war; (3) the Peep naval officers finally getting fed up with State Security; and (4) continued resistance to reform by conservatives on Grayson. This is a problem not only because of the sheer length of the book and the difficulty in keeping the stories and characters in place, but also because Weber gives a corresponding increase in the number of info-dumping committee meeting scenes to set the background for each story line. While these aren't a problem in his shorter books, it becomes tedious here and for the first time I found myself skimming over long sections of discussion or of a character philosophizing about some historical or political point. The stories themselves, taken individually, were fine and the tedium faded nicely in the last quarter of the book when the long buildup finally reached a climax. However, this really could have been four separate books, or one or two books focused on two of the story lines with the others dealt with much more succinctly. It was a chore to get through the first 500 pages. I’m still interested in what happens next with Honor, but I think I’ll wait a while before taking on the next book in the series.

I have avoided reviewing these books, in part I suspect because I was so emerged in just reading them 😀. Each one of this amazing series is truly the best of sci-fi that I've read. And I have read and enjoyed this genre from youth to retirement. I might be late coming to this particular party, but I am oh so enjoying it. Thank you David Weber! I am a new but dedicated fan.
