In answer to his son's questions, he explains that he will always protect the boy from the dangers of the Serengeti Plain and teaches him how to find water in their harsh environment. A glossary elaborates on the concepts introduced, such as the importance of cattle in Maasai life, medicinal uses of the Greenheart tree, and the role of the herd boy. The bright, stylized watercolors reflect the warm hues of the Serengeti. Details are clearly rendered, allowing children to visualize life in a culture different from their own. The father's red robe sweeps across much of the book, wrapping his small son in its protective embrace. Parents will snatch up this tender, reassuring book for bedtime read-alouds. Wonderful story for children about unconditional love, set in the Masai tribe of Africa. I love this presentation because of the message every child needs to hear and the exposure to other cultures that we all need to remind us that the world is bigger than just the world we know. Beautiful illustrations, great story, global awareness - how many books can do all that for a child!?!
I bought this book for friends who are expecting a baby boy. The font is very classic and easy to read, not distracting at all. The illustrations really make the book great though- very detailed and beautiful but not overwhelming either. I think it would be a great book for parents who are reading to their children (or teachers for that matter too) who are too young to read for themselves, but at the max age, I think 3/4 graders would still enjoy this book. Mine came paperback and just makes it easy if you're holding a little one and reading it at the same time or showing it to a group of kids.

Not what I bad hoped for
This is such a cute book, nice illustrations, clear, straightforward storyline, without being dull. My son refuses to read it after the first time, I don't know why. But hopefully we'll have years to try to have him warm up to it
I bought this book for my grandson who is 5 years old. This is a book that I hope he will forever keep. As a special treat I had the book signed by the artist illustrator Barbara Lavallee, one of my favorite artists.
Good, I like that it's about Maasai, but pales in comparison to the original: Mama, Do you love me?
