I am Rosa Parks (Ordinary People Change the World), by Brad Meltzer

From Booklist

Meltzer’s first-person narration and Eliopoulos’ comic-style illustrations bring an altogether different look and feel to the story of Rosa Parks. Beginning with childhood incidents that guided her later actions, this entry in the Ordinary People Change the World series proceeds with examples of Jim Crow laws and separate-but-equal disparities. These set the scene for Parks’ involvement in civil rights, her now-celebrated refusal to give up her seat on a bus, and the Montgomery Bus Boycott she inspired. While some might question this book’s biographic credentials because of its undocumented speech-bubble quotes, others will note how the visual format makes Parks and her time period accessible to young readers. An emphasis on Parks as an ordinary person who stood up for what’s right also lends itself well to character education studies. Concluding archival photos show the real Rosa Parks. Informative and appealing. Grades K-2. --Angela Leeper

"Always stand up for yourself."At a young age Rosa Parks was taught to not only respect others, but also respect herself. Respecting one's self is empowering. It is something that helped Rosa in standing her ground, and standing up for herself when she wasn't being treated fairly or with respect. It proved vital in her powerful stance for change during a time of segregation in our country. She is an example of how one person can make a huge impact in a world that is afraid of change. She peacefully stood up for herself, and the fair treatment of others. Her refusal to give up her seat sparked a movement, and changed the rules of segregation in her town. Though change didn't happen right away, it did happen.Rosa Parks is proof of how one person can inspire others, and bring about change. She's proof that no matter what, always stand up for yourself, and what you believe in. No matter how many times Rosa Parks was told no, or treated unfairly, she never let that get her down. She stood unmovable. She stood strong for what's right. I have always admired the courage and bravery that Rosa Parks had. Not just to defy the law, and what society at the time deemed acceptable (which it wasn't), she stood for what Thomas Jefferson long ago wrote, that we're all created equal."The only tired I was, was tired of giving in." - Rosa ParksRose Parks is an incredible example of how an ordinary person can do extraordinary things. Like every book in this fabulous series, at the end of the story is a quote, along with pictures, and facts about this incredible person! This is another fantastic book to pick up and add to your personal, classroom or public library.

My daughter loved this and read it over and over again for a while. She is 7. So old enough to know some things about the world but not old enough to understand all the complexities. Sometimes it's hard to talk about painful subjects without feeling like your are robbing your kid of childhood innocence.I would selfishly like to shield her from the ugliness of the world and I also understand it's my responsibility to educated her. This book did a great job of weaving her story, facts and inspiration in a kid friendly/digestible way. I am glad it's a part of our library. Especially in these times.

The whole Ordinary People Change the World series is so great! I got this one for my daughters, ages 6 and 7, and they both love it. The story is clear but not simple -- a lot of issues get raised. They learned about racism, boycotts, and when it might be understandable to push a kid (namely, when he pushes you first and you're little and there's no one there to defend you). They were interested to learn about a real person, and fascinated by the actual photos in the back. And this was a gentle way to get a handle on some basic, if disturbing, moments in American history -- including the idea that if they had been born seventy years ago, they'd have had to use a different water fountain and elevator than me. (I'm white, they are not.) It's not fun to teach your kids about racism, but it's wonderful to teach them about a hero who stood up for people and this is a smart, and still totally adorable, book to do that with.

Thank you, Mr. Meltzer for this series. My 5 year old can't get enough of these books and neither can I. This one, I Am Rosa Parks, is her favorite, but all of the books are great. In fact, inspired by this book and Chelsea Clinton's She Persisted (another great book), she has specifically asked for an "Amazing Girls" themed birthday party, so that "we can teach all of her friends about Rosa Parks, Harriet Tubman, Sally Ride, and Billie Jean King." I kept on pushing the idea off because THERE IS NO PINTEREST FOR STRONG GIRL BIRTHDAY PARTIES, but she insisted that this was the only birthday party she wanted. So, it's taken some ingenuity but we have pulled it together and I'm so so excited that we are using all of the "I Am" books about women as table decorations and favors for her friends. And, as a mother, it makes me so proud that my little girl wants to be strong, brave, and awesome just like these real life superheroes and wants every single one of her friends to know about these amazing women --- and that is because of the books that she has read this year. Thank you again for writing these books. They truly deserve a place on every child's bookshelf.

I cannot rave enough about this series of books. My (then) 6 year old son was given I am Albert Einstein last year, and he was instantly enchanted with the man, seeking out more and more information about him and recognizing some of the struggles Einstein faced as being similar to his own experiences with bullies and schools. After such a positive (educational and emotional) experience with that one, we picked up I am Rosa Parks a few weeks ago. And amazingly, the same thing happened! Meltzer must really understand kids, because he creates books that they not only LOVE, but that explain complex cultural and social ideas (and hugely embarrassing moments in US history), and break them down in a way that is clear to small children but that does not sugar coat or try to justify/explain.I seriously cannot say enough wonderful things about this series. We just got I am Abraham Lincoln yesterday and already my kid is dying to learn more about the 16th president! We're anxiously awaiting Amelia Earhart :)

Good book, even for my four-year-old, but I took out terms like black, white, and colored—just said it was different colored skin. He’s four and doesn’t need labels, but I figured it’s time to start learning it’s wrong to treat people differently because they look different than we do. We also got into the concept of breaking the law if it’s a bad law... Let’s hope that doesn’t come back to bite me!
